Xfce on a Gateway 9300 Solo
I had a wonderful time installing Xfce through Arch on my sister’s Gateway Solo 9300 this weekend. Before doing so, my only experience with the desktop environment had been through Xubuntu (not a good experience). After a quick inspect I found her hard drive was dead on arrival (and violently clicking I might add). Fortunately, the IT guys from my place of work were nice enough to part ways with a 10 GB 2.5in drive from their old parts drawer. With that problem solved I pondered over which OS to install. On her older, and much bigger, drive the Gateway laptop had housed Windows XP. Now I’m sure I could have shoe-horned XP back on, but with all the service packs and virus blocking bloat I figured something like Xfce could fit this 600 Mhz PIII much nicer. I wanted the box to be as light as possible… so Arch wins my vote hands down. I even added the new Arch logo to the start menu. I’m sure she could care less, but I think that’s hot! Here’s a screenshot of her “new” computer.

“littlelappy” is using Kazehakase for a web browser, Audacious for music, Abiword for word processing, Deluge for torrenting and Mirage for image viewing. Most of what is on this machine follows K.Mandla’s software blog entry. I am really digging Xfce on Arch; in fact I’ll be a bit bummed when the Gateway is given back to its owner.

I’ve gotten pretty frustrated with how heavy Ubuntu is, even running Openbox…does Arch maintain that desktop usability? I still a Linux noob–I don’t know if I move to something too different without some crutches, still.

Hello, Jake. I been asked this question before; it’s a very tricky question to answer. In some ways, I find Arch to have more desktop usability than Ubuntu. Arch follows KISS religiously, while Ubuntu works hard to serve the needs of the many (users). Arch will certainly run faster than Ubuntu, once you take the time to set it up. I’d recommend taking the time to read both these articles to see if Arch is for you:

Best of luck!
